Other British newspapers are getting just as excited.  And all of them say that the execution is unfair, and that China has acted unreasonably.  It’s probably the biggest story in Britain this week.  I've pasted a few more of these very biased stories below:

I think it might be interesting for anti-cnn, because it’s another example of the British press and the British government being hypocritical in their treatment of China.

- British people have been imprisoned, and in some cases executed, in other countries for smuggling drugs.  These countries include Thailand, Singapore, and America.  But the British press has never got so angry before about someone being executed in a foreign country.  It seems to me that they’re angry not because Akmal Shaikh was executed, but because China dared to execute a British person.

- There seems to be no doubt that Akmal Shaikh did smuggle the drugs: I've seen no suggestion in the press or from the British government that he didn't do it.  And it was a lot: 4kg of heroin is a huge amount.   A letter in Australia's Sydney Morning Herald today described Akmal Shaikh as "a harmless man".  This seems unfair: even if he does have bipolar disorder, someone who smuggles 4kg of heroin is not harmless.

- The complaints seem to be centred on the fact that Akmal Shaikh was mentally ill.  This is a fair criticism: it may be that he didn’t understand that what he was doing was wrong.  I’m not happy with the idea that it’s OK to execute mentally ill people, but China claims that there was no proof that he was mentally ill.

- It’s also worth noting that there are several British people who have been executed, or who are waiting to be executed, in America who are mentally ill, mentally disabled, or clearly innocent.  The mainstream British press has occasionally criticised the American justice system about this, but nowhere nearly as fiercely as they’ve criticised China about Akmal Shaikh.  The British government has never publicly made similarly serious criticisms of America about mentally-ill British citizens being imprisoned or executed in America.

- The most obvious example of the British government’s double standards here concerns another case.  Britain has complained loudly and angrily to China about Akmal Shaikh.  But it is doing everything it can to cooperate with America over the case of Gary McKinnon.  McKinnon has autism, so he doesn’t understand the consequences of his actions.  From Britain, he is accused of having hacked into the computer networks of NASA, the US Army, US Navy, Department of Defense, and the US Air Force.  The US wants to extradite him to America to face terrorism charges.  If he is extradited, he could be given up to 70 years in prison.   The British government has made no official complaint to America, and has not attempted to block American attempts to have McKinnon sent from Britain to America.  You can read more about this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_McKinnon (if you can get in to Wikipedia), or at http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/nov/27/gary-mckinnon-aspergers-autistic.  The British press has said that the treatment of McKinnon is unfair, but their complaints have been tiny compared to their complaints about Akmal Shaikh.

- It is worth noting that this week was a bad time to execute Akmal Shaikh in terms of China's relationship with the media.  Nothing happens in politics or business in Britain in the week between Christmas and New Year, so the newspapers are always looking for something to get their readers excited about.  When they got the opportunity to write stories that demonise China, they welcomed it enthusiastically. 

这个因为处决Akmal Shaikh而令人不快的本周似乎也并没怎么样，在圣诞与新年之间的这一周政府与商业也没有发生什么，报纸一如继往地捕捉着能让读者兴奋的话题。当们有找到机会写点儿东西来妖魔化一下中国时，他们就觉得挺狂喜了。

While I'm happy for you to quote me on all of this, you must include the following:

My comments do not mean that I approve of the execution of Akmal Shaikh.  I do not agree with the death penalty in general, and think that its use is immoral.  In addition, if Akmal Shaikh was mentally ill, the courts should have made an allowance for this, and he should not have been executed.  What makes me angry in this case is the hypocrisy of the international media and of the British and EU governments: their condemnation of China is not consistent with their treatment of the US and other countries in similar cases.
